An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) is provided to form an optical sensor to detect external light at a liquid crystal panel. An LCD comprises a liquid crystal panel(1), a light detection part(LS), an output line(L0), power lines and a dimming unit. The liquid crystal panel(1) has a liquid crystal layer installed between an active matrix substrate(2) and a substrate arranged opposite to the active matrix substrate(2). The light detection part(LS) has an optical sensor, installed on the active matrix substrate(2), to detect external light. The output line(L0) deduces an output signal from the light detection part(LS). Regular voltage is supplied to the power lines. The dimming unit is controlled by the output of the light detection part(LS). The optical sensor is coated with a transparent electrode as a transparent insulation layer is inserted. The transparent electrode is electrically connected with the power lines.
