A phone book data storage device in a portable terminal and a method are provided to store phone book data in a separate memory except a memory of a file system, thereby restoring the phone book data stored in the separate memory even though the file system is damaged by an error or malfunction of the terminal. A portable terminal checks whether an event for inputting data to a phone book is generated by a user's key operation(301). If so, the portable terminal displays a window for inputting the phone book data, and checks whether the inputting action of the phone book data is completed(303). If so, the portable terminal stores the inputted data in a phone book of a storage existing in a memory area of a file system, while storing the data in a phone book storage for recovery existing in a separate memory area except the file system(305).
