This invention relates to the preparation of (R)-(-)-3-(carbamoylmethyl)- 5- methylhexanoic acid, in particular, the resolution of the acid racemate b y means of salification with optically active amines and subsequent acidific ation to give the (R) enantiomer of the acid; this invention also concerns t he salt intermediates formed with said amines and the conversion of said (R) -(-)-3-(carbamoylmethyl)-5- methylhexanoic acid into biologically active mol ecules such as pregabalin.
