PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress occurrence of folding of a tip of a paper sheet, without causing enlargement of a sheet feeder of such as an ADF and degradation in capacity (specification) of the sheet feeder. SOLUTION: A separating roller 153 is rotated at a first revolution speed V1 until a first paper sheet of a document is carried from when continuous automatic feed is started, and then the separating roller 153 is rotated at a second revolution speed V2 higher than the first revolution speed V1. Since the revolution speed of the separating roller 153 gets slow until the first sheet of document is fed from when the first sheet is fed, the force of the collision when the first sheet of the document collides with a separating pad 154 can be reduced. Therefore, the occurrence of the folding of the tip of the first paper sheet of document can be prevented without taking measure of enlarging the separating roller 153 or reducing the number of sheets to be stacked/placed.
