A system for automatically controlling tension of a chain and a method for driving the same are provided to check an erroneous operation of the rack master in order to maintain a certain level by automatically controlling the tension of the chain and prevent damages of stowage. A system for automatically controlling tension of a chain includes a binding unit, a chain(34), a bar code(43), a bar code reader(44), motors(M1,M2), a sensor(50), and a control unit. The binding unit binds a carriage unit. The chain is bound by the chain unit, a nut(41) and a bolt. The chain makes the binding unit to move up and down. The bar code recognizes a position to the nut exposed between the chain and the binding unit. The bar code reader reads the bar code by being installed in a body of an up-down frame corresponding to the bar code. The motors are installed in the binding unit so as to make the bolt rotary for controlling the tension of the chain. The sensor senses tension attenuation of the chain installed in the binding unit and the body of the up-down frame. The control unit controls the tension by controlling the motor in case of sensing the tension attenuation of the chain sensed from the sensor.
