An apparatus and a method for adjusting sound effects in a television are provided to detect a motion amount and color distribution of a broadcasted screen, and automatically adjust a sound effect mode according to contents of broadcasting, thereby improving realism of the broadcasting by using the sound effects suitable for the broadcasting contents without inconvenience that a user manually selects the mode. A motion amount detector(21) detects a motion amount of a current video frame and a previous video frame stored in a video information storage(15). A color distribution detector(22) detects the color distribution of the current video frame stored in the video information storage. A sound effect mode storage(24) stores corresponding sound effect modes according to the motion amount and color distribution. A sound effect mode selecting unit(23) selects a sound effect mode in the sound effect mode storage based on the motion amount and color distribution values, detected by the motion amount detector and color distribution detector, and transmits the selected mode to a microprocessor(9) to generate sound effects.
