The invention provides a method for detecting a propensity toward or risk of developing preeclampsia, comprising detecting in a female subject the pr esence of a single base pair point mutation, .DELTA.A at position +1754, in the HLA-G mRNA 3'UTR. The mutation is associated with preeclampsic subjects, and with decreased RNA stability in vitro. The presence of this .DELTA.A mu tation may provide an explanation for lower levels of HLA-G expression seen in association with preeclampsia. |
