Epoxy resins are made by reacting an orthotitanic acid ester with a monoglycidyl compound containing at least one hydroxyl group, selected from glycidol and its monoethers with di- or polyalcohols, to produce a resin <FORM:0903132/IV(a)/1> in which x is zero or a whole number and R is alkylene, alkyleneoxy, arylene, aryleneoxy or substituted forms of these groups, the resin then being hardened by reacting with an organic amine or an acid anhydride. The examples describe the reaction of tetrabutyl titanate with:-(1) glycidol; (2) glycol monoglycidyl ether and (3) resorcinol monoglycidyl ether, the products being cured by reaction with:- (1) diethylamine and (2) and (3) phthalic anhydride.ALSO:Epoxy containing compounds of the formula <FORM:0903132/IV (b)/1> where x is zero or a whole number and R is alkyleneoxy, or aryleneoxy or substituted forms of these groups, are made by reacting an ortho-titanic acid ester with glycidol or a monoether thereof with a di- or polyalcohol. The examples describe the reaction of tetrabutyl titanate with:-(1) glycidol; (2) glycol monoglycidyl ether and (3) resorcinol monoglycidyl ether. |
