An apparatus and a method for inputting characters in a portable terminal are provided to increase the convenience of users by speedily inputting characters and minimizing the number of input strokes. An apparatus for inputting characters in a portable terminal comprises a key input part(127) and a control part(110). The key input part(127) comprises basic consonant keys, consonant operation keys, basic vowel keys, and vowel operation keys. Basic consonants "giyeok", "nieun", and "ieung" respectively are allocated to the basic consonant keys. Inputted together with the basic consonant keys, the consonant operation keys are provided to display the other consonants except the basic consonants. Basic vowels "a", "ya", "eo", and "i" respectively are allocated to the basic vowel keys. The vowel operation keys, inputted together with the basic vowel keys, are provided to display the other vowels except the basic vowels. If a basic consonant key is inputted, the control part(110) displays a basic consonant corresponding to the inputted key. If a basic consonant key is inputted together with a consonant operation key, the control part(110) displays an associated consonant except the basic consonants. If a basic vowel key is inputted, the control part(110) displays a basic vowel equivalent to the inputted key. If a basic vowel key is inputted together with a vowel operation key, the control part(110) displays an associated vowel except the basic vowels. |
