A method for detecting the type of an optical disc is provided to perform an optical disc type detecting operation efficiently and to minimize the number of retry for the detecting operation. A method for detecting the type of an optical disc includes a step of performing an optical disc type detecting operation and storing and managing a detecting result in database(S10,S11,S14,S15), and a step of changing an optical disc type detecting order selectively by searching and referring to the database when sensing the type of an optical disc inserted newly(S12,S13). The database is created and managed in a non-volatile memory in a super multi drive which can receive different types of optical discs, and stores and manages the optical disc type detecting result which corresponds to a usage pattern of a user, where the detecting result is an optional value which is obtained by multiplying the number of retry for the optical disc type detecting operation by a weighted value.
