PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic imaging apparatus capable of high speed and high accuracy extracting feature quantities for personal identification, and a personal identification system for identifying an individual using the feature quantity extracted by the electronic imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: Image data are obtained by operating an imaging section 1, having a plurality of operation modes, including a first operation mode for acquiring image data with small data quantity and a second operation mode for acquiring high-resolution image data, in the first operation mode first. A facial area detection section 2 detects a facial area in which a face exists from the image data. A facial area expansion section 3 and a feature quantity detection area extracting section 4 determine a feature quantity detecting area for detecting the feature quantity for personal identification, from the image data obtained by operating the imaging section 1 in the second operation mode, based on the face area detected by the facial area detecting section 2.
