A method for detecting filter failures in a particulate filter system for a diesel engine is provided to detect accurately damage of a filter by using a relational formula using a pressure difference monitored at a front end and a rear end of a filter in accordance with the flow of exhaust gas. A method for detecting filter failures in a particulate filter system for a diesel engine, includes a step(S10) of setting a first reference value of a smoke collecting function of the particulate filter system, a step(S20) of monitoring an exhaust flow rate using a pressure difference, engine RPM, exhaust gas temperature, fuel injection amount and fuel injection timing, a step(S30) of calculating a smoke collection amount on the filter by using the monitored pressure difference and the exhaust flow rate, a step(S40) of calculating a smoke collection amount on the filter after elapse of first predetermined time, a step(S50) of calculating and storing the difference between the smoke collection amount calculated in the step(S30) and the smoke collection amount calculated in the step(S40); a step(S90) of comparing the difference calculated in the step(S50) and a second reference value, and a step(S100) of determining filter regeneration timing if the difference is bigger than the second reference value.
