The present invention provides a method of vaccinating a young animal aga inst L. intracellularis infection comprising the step of administering to sa id animal an effective dose of L. intracellularis antigen. It also provides a method of vaccinating an animal, preferably a young animal, having anti-L. intracellularis antibodies or is exposed to anti-L. intracellularis antibod ies. In particular, those anti-L. intracellularis antibodies are maternally derived antibodies.
