Provided is an image recording/reproducing device capable of improving user-friendliness and continuously using a removable recording unit when it is mounted while keeping a past recorded image not erased. A recording device (16) is an image recording/reproducing device, and an HDD is a removable recording unit. When an HDD is added, the recording device (16) judges the format state of the added HDD and further judges whether the HDD operation state such as a single operation or a mirror operation coincides with the device operation state of the recording device (16). The HDD operation state corresponds to a unit operation state. The recording device (16) recognizes the added HDD which has been recording-device-formatted and having the HDD operation state coinciding with the device operation state by the current HDD operation state. If the added HDD has been recording-device-formatted but having the HDD operation state different from the device operation state, the recording device (16) rewrites the HDD operation state so as to coincide with the device operation state and recognizes it.
