An apparatus and a method for automatic repeat request in a multi-hop system based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access are provided to enable a relay station to manage ARQ(Automatic Repeat reQuest) state transparently between a terminal and a base station. According to a method for ARQ(Automatic Repeat reQuest) in a multi-hop system based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, data is transmitted to a destination when the data is received from a source. When a feedback message is received from the destination, the feedback message received from the source is transmitted. When the data is not received from the source, a feedback message dedicated for a relay station is transmitted.
