A proximity sensor and a proximity sensing method are provided to remove artifacts due to a temperature and humidity from a sensor output by removing a reference pulse signal from a sensor pulse signal. A proximity sensor includes a sensor electrode(2), a first sensor circuit(4), a reference capacitor(6), a second sensor circuit(8) and a calculator(12). The sensor electrode has a capacitance, which is varied according to an approach of an object. The first sensor circuit is operative to provide a first pulse signal with a pulse width determined according to the capacitance between the sensor electrode and a ground. The second sensor circuit is operative to provide a second pulse signal with a pulse width determined according to the capacitance of the reference capacitor. The calculator removes the second pulse signal from the first pulse signal to calculate a difference pulse and provides a pulse width of the difference pulse.
