PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp in which an electrode support rod is inserted via a metal foil in a recessed part of an electrode, which is superior in dimension precision of the axial direction, furthermore in which there is no variation in retaining force of the electrode by the electrode support rod among products, and which can be retained surely. SOLUTION: In the discharge lamp in which the electrode support rod is inserted via the metal foil in the recessed part of the electrode, the recessed part of the electrode is tapered to become narrower heading toward inside the electrode, the insertion part of the electrode support rod is also tapered to become narrower heading toward the tip, a taper angle of these two is the same angle, and the taper angle isθ≥0.8°.
