Actinogan (claimed per se), which is an actinomycete and a complex polysaccharide having a substantial activity against Sarcoma 180, is produced by cultivating the microorganism ATCC 13748 under submerged aerobic conditions in an aqueous medium comprising a carbohydrate or lard oil and a nitrogenous nutrient. The carbohydrate may be cerelose. The nitrogenous nutrient may be sodium or ammonium nitrate, corn steep liquor, yeast, or soybean meal. Cultivation may be at 22 DEG -32 DEG C. for 1-5 days. The crude product may be separated from the broth produced by cultivation by saturating with ammonium sulphate and centrifuging. Purification may be effected by dissolving in water, dialysing the solution, precipitating with acetone, redissolving in water, and treating with a cross-linked dextran polymeric molecular sieve. The product has a molecular weight of more than 7,000, it has a wide shoulder between 260-280 mu in its ultraviolet absorption spectrum, and it imparts resistance to Staphylococcus aureus.
