The invention concerns a pattern cutting apparatus for cutting patterns out of a substantially planar work piece, the apparatus comprising:a housing (20); a work piece supporting platform (30); a cutter assembly supported by the housing, the cutter assembly comprising a cutter carrier (1020) having a work piece contacting surface (1030), the cutter carrier being resiliently biased toward the platform for maintaining the work piece contacting surface in contact with the work piece and for enabling the cutter carrier to move upwardly when the work piece contacting surface engages raised portions of the work piece, and a cutter (1040) extending beyond the work piece contacting surface by a predetermined distance, the cutter assembly and platform being movable relative to one another in three orthogonal directions; and a controller operatively connected to at least one of the cutter assembly and platform to move the cutter assembly and platform relative to one another in the three orthogonal directions.
