A polylactone, polylactone alkyl ether, polylactone alkyl ester, etc. are obtained by reacting a lactone compound of the following general formula (1), such as epsilon-caprolactone, in the presence of powdery active carbon optionally with the use of an initiator, such as a polyhydric alcohol, an aliphatic alcohol or an aliphatic carboxylic acid. [Chemical formula 1] (1) (wherein R1 is a C2-C18 alkylene optionally substituted with at least one C1-C10 alkyl). Any target compound of high quality can be obtained with high yield, and the catalyst can be easily separated.
