A skin on, or for use on, the body of a vehicle, ship, aircraft &c. comprises a sheet 1 of aluminium or aluminion alloy having a protective coating 2, e.g. of stainless steel, nickel or nickel alloy. The sheet 1, Fig. 1, of A1.Mn, A1.Mg.Mn. or A1.Mg.Si, is welded in a protective gas atmosphere, using a wire of A1.Mg.Mn.Si.Cr, to an extruded section 3 of A1.Mg.Si.Mn.Cr, A1.Zn.Mg, or A1.Mg. In Fig. 2, a channel-section 8 of the A1 alloy is secured by spot, or plug, welding 9 to the skin 6. The abutting edges of two of the sheets may be joined together by welding, Fig. 3 (not shown), or by an A1 alloy strap 16, Fig. 4, secured by plug or spot welding 17. The steel plating 13 may also be welded. Instead of continuous runs of welding, discontinuous seams may be formed on one or both sides of the joint. |
