PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical module made thin in an optical axis direction and capable of accurately detecting the position of a lens, and to provide a portable terminal provided with the optical module. SOLUTION: The optical module is provided with a lens-holding body 22 for holding a lens group 21; a motor 13 having an output shaft 13b extending, in a direction orthogonal to the optical axis of the lens group 21 and capable of rotating the output shaft 13b; and a transmission mechanism 53 for converting the rotation of the output shaft 13b into a translational motion, in the optical direction and transmitting the translational motion to the lens-holding body 22. The optical module includes a photoelectric sensor 61, which is a detection part for detecting the position of the lens-holding body 22 in the optical axis direction and a detected part 62 formed on the side surface part (base board) 221 of the lens-holding body 22. The detection part 61 executes light emission/reception, having a peak in an infrared area and the detected part 62 forms a reflection-type infrared cut filter, so that the infrared light which is not transmitted can be reflected efficiently, a large output is obtained from the detection part 61 and lens position can be detected accurately.
