Production of 3(4),8(9)-dihydroxymethyl- tricyclo(5.2.1.02.6)decane (A) involves: - (a) hydroformylating dicyclopentadiene to give 8(9)-formyl-tricyclo(5.2.1.02.6)dec-3-ene (B); - (b) hydroformylating (B) to give 3(4),8(9)-bisformyl-tricyclo(5.2.1.0 2.6)decane (C); and hydrogenating (C) to (A). - Production of 3(4),8(9)-dihydroxymethyl- tricyclo(5.2.1.02.6)decane (A) comprises - (a) hydroformylating dicyclopentadiene at 70-150 deg. C/0.5-10 MPa with synthesis gas in a heterogeneous system using an aqueous solution of water-soluble organic phosphorus (III) compounds complexed with Group VIII transition metal compounds to give 8(9)- formyl-tricyclo(5.2.1.02.6)dec-3-ene (B); - (b) separating the aqueous and organic phases and hydroformylating (B) at 70-140 deg. C/5-35 MPa with synthesis gas in a homogeneous organic phase in presence of a Group VIII transition metal compound to give 3(4),8(9)-bisformyl-tricyclo(5.2.1.02.6)decane (C); and hydrogenating (C) to give (A).
