The device has a force sensor (44) delivering a signal of measurement of tension of a timing belt (12) of an engine of a motor vehicle. A logic controller (48) is connected to the sensor and detectors (62, 64). The controller determines sliding of the belt by comparing speeds of a drive pulley and the belt of the engine. The controller delivers an alarm signal when a sliding value of the belt exceeds a preset sliding value and/or when a tension value of the belt is less than or greater than a preset minimum or maximum tension value, respectively.
