<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of easily switching contrast priority operation and brightness priority operation and hardly causing the deterioration in image quality and the loss of light quantity when switching them. <P>SOLUTION: Since a second retardation plate 59 is arranged to advance/retreat on an optical path by a driving device 91 so as to switch the polarization direction of modulated light from a first optical modulation part 25, the path of modulated light from the first optical modulation part 25 can be easily switched between a first optical path PA1 shortcut to straight advance through a polarizing beam splitter 51 and a second optical path PA2 folded by the polarizing beam splitter 51, going and returning in a relay optical system 60 or the like and detouring to be submitted to luminance modulation in a second optical modulation part 70. Thus, the contrast priority operation using the first and the second optical modulation parts 25 and 70 and the brightness priority operation using only the first optical modulation part 25 are easily switched, and the deterioration in image quality and the loss of light quantity in projection are effectively restrained. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
