PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve timing device capable of reducing electric power consumption, and capable of protecting an apparatus, when learning a reference position for securing detecting accuracy of the valve opening-closing timing. SOLUTION: When learning the reference position, an operation quantity of an actuator is set so as to change an intake valve phase toward the most ignition timing delay position included in a small area of a variation in the intake valve phase to the actuator operation quantity (S110). When the intake valve phase does not change since the intake valve phase reaches the most delaying ignition timing position (when determining as YES in S140), learning is completed by determining that the intake valve phase reaches the most delaying ignition timing position being a reference phase.
