PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which is capable of improving image quality during low gradation display. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device 1 includes; an image determination circuit 2 which receives image data having a maximum of n gradations (n is an integer equal to or larger than 2) and determines whether an image to be displayed by the image data is a low-gradation image of which all the gradation values show k (k is an integer equal to or larger than one and is smaller than n) or less gradations or not; an image data conversion circuit 3 which converts the image data to slide image data resulting from sliding bit data constituting the image data in a MSB direction in the case that the image is determined to be a low-gradation image by the image determination circuit 2; a liquid crystal driver 4 which supplies a liquid crystal application voltage to a liquid crystal panel on the basis of the slide image data; and a backlight dimming circuit 6 which reduces luminance of backlight 7 transmitted through the liquid crystal panel 5, in comparison with normal backlight luminance in the case that the image is determined to be a low-gradation image by the image determination circuit 2.
