The invention comprises 3-(5-5H-dibenzo-[a,d]cyclopentenyl)propionic acid and its C1- 5 alkyl esters; the preparation thereof by reacting 5H-dibenzo[a, d]cycloheptene with acrylonitrile, hydrolysing the resulting propionitrile and, if desired, esterifying the resulting propionic acid; and the preparation 5-(3-hydroxypropyl)-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten by reduction of the above substituted propionic acid or a C1- 5 alkyl ester thereof. 5 - (3 - Methylaminopropyl) - 5H - dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene is prepared by treating 5-(3-hydroxypropyl - 5H - dibenzo[a, d]cycloheptene with methane sulphonyl chloride in the presence of pyridine and reacting the resulting 5-(3-methanesulphonyloxypropyl) - 5H - dibenzo[a, d]cycloheptene with methylamine.
