Cement clinker is produced by the thermal treatment of slugs 5 formed by passing the plastic raw material 3 through a kneader device in which a scraper blade, stirrer arm or the like 2 squeezes the raw material through holes 4 in the kneader device in such a manner that the pressure of the blade acts non-uniformly on the material so that the issuing slugs have deep cracks 6 in their surface. Fig. 2 shows press 7 where the raw material slurry is dewatered to form a plastic filter cake whence it passes via conveyer 8 to kneader device 9 where it is converted to slugs which are passed into hopper 11 of a Lepol grate 12 and thence to rotary kiln 13.
