A more electropositive metal than zinc is used in a cell having separate anolytes and catholytes isolated from each other by a buffer zone containing a solution of a salt that has a cation of a more electropositive metal than zinc and an anion at least as low in the electrochemical series as the depolarizer, the zone being bounded by on the anolyte side by a positive ion-permeable diaphragm containing bound negative groups and on the catholyte side by a negative non-permeable diaphragm containing bound position groups. The anolyte is substantially free of hydrogen ions as a protic solvent and has a specific electrical conductivity of at least 10<SP>-3</SP> ohms<SP>-1</SP>cm.<SP>-1</SP> The catholyte is a protic solvent and contains an acid the anion of which is at least as low in the electrochemical series as the depolarizer and has a specific conductivity of at least 10<SP>-3</SP>ohms<SP>-1</SP>cm.<SP>-1</SP> |
