PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate an image signal having appropriate strength regardless of the brightness of an object. SOLUTION: When focus position adjustment is started, average luminance Yave is detected in an entire scan region first (step S100). When the average luminance Yave is lower than a first threshold (step S101),αpixels are mixed (step S102). An amplification factor is set to a/α(step S103). When the average luminance Yave is between first and second thresholds (steps S101, S104),βpixels are mixed (step S105). The amplification factor is set to a/β(step S106).
