Novel piperidine derivatives of the general formula <FORM:1087174/C2/1> in which Ph is a phenyl radical optionally substituted by halogen, R1 is a hydrogen atom or hydroxy group, X is an oxygen or sulphur atom, R2 and R3 are the same or different and are each a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group containing up to 5 carbon atoms, an aryl group or aralkyl group optionally substituted by an alkoxy group or R2 and R3 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are both attached form a heterocyclic ring which may contain additional hetero atoms but excludng the case in which X is a sulphur atom and R2 and R3 are both hydrogen atoms, are obtained by reacting a piperidine derivative of the general formula <FORM:1087174/C2/2> wherein R1 and Ph have the above meanings, with an alkali metal cyanate or thiocyanate, an isocyanate or thiocyanate of the general formula RNCX (wherein X is as defined above and R is an alkyl group, an optionally substituted aryl or aralkyl group) or with a reactive functional derivative of a substituted carbamic or thiocarbamic acid. Pharmaceutical compositions containing the above compounds and having anti-tussive activity may be administered orally, by injection or as a suppository.
