A hand drying device comprising a high-pressure air stream generating device (2) for generating a high-pressure air stream, a nozzle (4) for jetting a high-pressure air stream generated by the high-pressure air stream generating device (2), a drying space forming unit having a hand inserting portion (3) that permits hand insertion/extraction and formed with a drying space (6) that dries hands inserted through the this hand inserting unit (3) with a high-pressure air stream jetted from the nozzle (4), and one to a plurality of hand detection units (8) each having an infrared emitting element and an infrared receiving element provided on the same wall surface of the drying space forming unit to detect hands inserted into the drying space, the high-pressure air stream generating device (2) being driven and controlled based on a detection signal from the hand detection unit (8), wherein the device further comprises an infrared absorbing unit (10) being smaller in reflectance of infrared ray than hands and formed at a potion facing at least the infrared emitting element of the hand detection unit (8) on the wall surface of the drying space forming unit to thereby prevent with high accuracy an erroneous operation otherwise caused when a person other than a user approaches the device and keep a wide range of hand detection. |
