A control method for a versatile portable charger is provided to enable a single connection jack to charge various batteries by obtaining proper voltages for the respective batteries from a microcomputer. A resistor is implemented on a battery which is connected to a connection jack of a portable charger. Unique charging voltage and current values are set for the respective batteries. The proper voltage and current values are supplied to the battery by using a circuit pattern which is arranged between the connection jack and the battery. The connection jack is directly connected to a battery terminal without using a separate coupling jack. A microcomputer reads data for the connection jack and outputs a setting control signal based on a recognized kind of the battery. A charging circuit having the microcomputer is arranged in the portable charger.
