A diesel-electric locomotive which comprises an alternator has a first controller for controlling the locomotive when it is being used as a vehicle and a second controller which controls the power plant of the locomotive when it is stationary so as to permit the use of the locomotive as an electrical supply plant. When used as a vehicle the controller is effective to control the diesel prime mover in accordance with the speed of the alternator, the speed of the traction motors and the commands from the cab whereas when the locomotive is being used as a stationary power plant the corresponding controller is controlled by control of the prime mover, the control being modified if the power plant is operating in parallel with a further A.C. supply. |
