Polyurethane elastomers are prepared by reacting (i) a diol of formula and (ii) an hydroxy terminated polyester or polyether diol of M.W. 500 to 5000 and (iii) optionally an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diol with (iv) an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic diisocyanate, wherein R and R<SP>1</SP>, which may be the same or different, are each divalent, aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, arylaliphatic or cycloaliphatic-aliphatic radicals. Preferred diols (i) are N,N<SP>1</SP>-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)pyromellimide, N, N<SP>1</SP>-bis(2-hydroxypropyl)pyromellimide and N, N<SP>1</SP> - bis(4 - hydroxycyclohexyl)pyromellimide. The polyesters, polyethers, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diols and diisocyanates are those conventionally used in the art. The polyurethane so produced may be cast or spun directly or dissolved in an organic solvent, e.g. dimethylsulphoxide or a cresol and then east or spun.
