Cutter device with variable section length has a cutter cylinder (3) and a transfer cylinder (4) that is used with the cutter cylinder to cut signatures of a chosen length and that rotates around a middle axis (12). On the periphery of the transfer cylinder (4) is an adjustable diameter section that connects to the transfer cylinder and that can be moved to and fro towards the cylinder axis (12) to change the signature length. The adjustable section comprises a roller (9) that can be moved to and fro towards the cylinder axis (12). An Independent claim is made for a folding apparatus in a rotary printer for generating signatures of variable length.
