PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a cleaning mechanism and to prevent the cleaning mechanism from influencing the replacing operation of an optical scanning unit. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with the cleaning mechanism for cleaning the seal glass 123 of the optical scanning unit which performs exposure so as to form an image on an image carrier. The cleaning mechanism 10 holds a cleaning bar 70, equipped with a pad 80 capable of cleaning the surface of the seal glass 123 by sliding on the seal glass 123 at its edge part so as to slide in the longitudinal direction of the seal glass 123, and holds the cleaning bar 70 at an insertion completing position so that the pad 80 is above the optical scanning unit 120 and is at a position separated from the surface of the optical scanning unit 120.
