摘要 A lubricating oil composition contains from 0,1 to 10% of a copolymer of esters of ethylene carboxylic acids containing from 3 to 5 carbon atoms having a molecular weight no greater than about 130 and wherein the ethylenic double bond is conjugated with a carboxyl group has one of the acids esterified with a saturated aliphatic primary monohydric alcohol having from one to twelve carbon atoms, the alcohol containing not more than one heteroatom this being oxygen and forming an ether linkage and the other esterified with an alkylphenyl-ether substituted lower 1,2-alkylene glycol having less than 4 alkylene oxy units in the glycol chain (see Group IV(a)). The copolymers are of alkyl-phenoxy alkyl or allyloxy acrylates with alkyl or alkyloxy acrylates, e.g. 3-pentadecyl phenoxypropyl acrylate with ethyl acrylate. Tables are given showing the effects of these copolymers on a light, highly refined Pennsylvania type mineral oil composed essentially of a mixture of paraffins, a highly refined mid-continent oil, automobile engine multigrade lubricating oils of SAE 10W-20 and a dervoxed light mineral oil.ALSO:A copolymer of esters of ethylene carboxylic acids containing from 3 to 5 carbon atoms, having a molecular weight no greater than about 130 and wherein the ethylenic double bond is conjugated with a carboxyl group has one of the acids esterified with a saturated aliphatic primary monohydric alcohol having from one to twelve carbon atoms, the alcohol containing not more than one hetero atom this being oxygen and forming an ether linkage and the other esterified with an alkyl-phenylether substituted lower 1,2-alkylene glycol having less than 4 alkyleneoxy units in the glycol chain. Specified monomers include ethyl acrylate, ethoxy ethyl acrylate, fused oil acrylate, ethyl methacrylate, n-butyl methacrylate, n-amyl methacrylate, 2-ethyl-butyl methacrylate and lauryl methacrylate which are copolymerized with 3-pentadecyl phenoxy ethyl acrylate or methacrylate, dodecyl- or nonyl-phenoxyethyl acrylate, 3-pentadecyl phenoxy propyl acrylate or cardanoxy ethyl or propyl or ethoxy ethyl acrylate. The polymerization may take place in solution, e.g. heptane, using catalysts, e.g. benzoyl peroxide.
