<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cathode active material for a secondary battery with excellent thermostability and high charge/discharge capacity with the use of safe and low-cost materials. <P>SOLUTION: Lithium metal complex oxide Li<SB>1+z</SB>Ni<SB>1-x-y</SB>Co<SB>x</SB>Nb<SB>y</SB>O<SB>2</SB>(provided, 0.10≤x≤0.21, 0.01≤y≤0.08, -0.05≤z≤0.10) is obtained by adding niobium salt solution and alkali solution to mixture aqueous solution of nickel salt and cobalt salt at the same time, making hydroxide of nickel, cobalt, and niobium to coprecipitate to obtain complex hydroxide, and mixing and baking the complex hydroxide and a lithium compound.
