A process for producing 2,6-dimethyl phenol includes reacting 4-tert.-butyl-2,6-dimethylphenol with phenol in the presence of an acidic catalyst selected from the group consisting of inorganic acids, metal halides and aromatic sulphonic acids in an amount of 0À5 to 10% by weight of the 4-tert.-butyl-2,6-dimethylphenol at a temperature of 120‹ to 180‹ C. for 0À5 to 6 hours to yield 2,6-dimethylphenol and 4- tert.-butylphenol and separating by distillation 2,6-dimethylphenol from a mixture of 4-tert.- butylphenol, unreacted phenol, unreacted 4- tert.-butyl-2,6-dimethylphenol, 2-methylphenol and the catalyst. 4-Tert.-butylphenol may be subjected to hydroxymethylation to obtain 4- tert.-butyl - 2,6 - dihydroxymethylphenol and the latter reduced to obtain 4-tert.-butyl-2,6- dimethylphenol which is subjected to detertiary butylation as above and unreacted phenol, 2-methyl phenol and unreacted 4-tert. butyl-2,6-dimethylphenol recycled to the detertiary butylation and 4-tart.-butylphenol to the hydroxymethylation step. The process may be operated batchwise or continuously. Examples are furnished.
