An aqueous binder composition for a paint comprising an oligomeric or polymeric substance formed from at least one monomer of the general formula I: (R<SUP>1</SUP>O- ) <SUB>m</SUB>Si ( -R<SUP>x</SUP>-NR<SUP>2</SUP>R<SUP>3</SUP> ) <SUB>4-m</SUB> wherein at least one nitrogen radical within the group - NR<SUP>2</SUP>R<SUP>3</SUP> is directly bonded to an R<SUP>z</SUP> group, and R<SUP>z</SUP> is -(C=O)R<SUP>4</SUP> or -(C=O)-OR<SUP>5</SUP>.
