PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrophoretic device that can reduce consumed power without degrading the display quality and to provide a method for driving the electrophoretic device. SOLUTION: The electrophoretic device comprises: an electrophoretic panel (10) having an electrophoretic layer held between a first electrode and a second electrode; a history holding section (22) holding past display data; a judging section (23) judging whether the current display data coincide with the past display data held by the history holding section or not, and outputting a status detection signal indicating the judgment result; and driving sections (24, 25) setting, based on the status detection signal, magnitude of an effective voltage to be supplied to between the first electrode and the second electrode to a first value when the past display data coincide with the current display data, and setting to a second value larger than the first value when the past display data do not coincide with the current display data.
