Y-shaped automotive exhaust system tests functioning of first-stage inlet components during regeneration of downstream common catalytic converter

In a process to operate an automotive exhaust system, exhaust gases are surrendered from two banks of cylinders to a Y-shaped exhaust pipe assembly. Each incoming exhaust pipe branch has a pre-catalytic converter, each then surrendering the gases to a common three-way catalytic converter that is regenerated at intervals in a reduction atmosphere. During regeneration, the function of components in the feed pipes is tested. An independent claim is included for a control apparatus.
