<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monochromatic reflective liquid crystal display apparatus having high display quality, in particular, having a liquid crystal layer containing liquid crystal molecules in twisted alignment. <P>SOLUTION: The monochromatic reflective liquid crystal display apparatus comprises: a liquid crystal display panel LPN that holds a liquid crystal layer containing liquid crystal molecules having twisted alignment at a twist angle of 70°±10° between a first substrate having a plurality of reflective patterns projecting from the main surface of the substrate and a second substrate disposed opposing to the first substrate; and an optical element OD including a polarizing plate 61 provided on the outer face of the second substrate, a first retardation plate RF1 as a half-wave plate disposed between the polarizing plate 61 and the liquid crystal display panel LPN, and a second retardation plate RF2 as a quarter-wave plate disposed between the first retardation plate RF1 and the liquid crystal display panel LPN; wherein the retardation value Δn×d of the liquid crystal layer LQ defined by the refractive anisotropy Δn of the liquid crystal layer LQ and the thickness (d) of the liquid crystal layer LQ is configured to 200±30 nm. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
