A retainer for a metal detector comprises a carrier (2) with a uniform profile in an adjustable range, and concisely including a guiding carriage. The carrier is rigidly fastened to a base frame (1), and a flexible belt (6) is fixed at the carrier at its upper region. The belt is guided in the guiding carriage, and is fastened to a roll-up roller (8) mounted on the guiding carriage. The roller is rotatable over a drive for changeable rolling up of the belt. The guiding carriage is designed as carrier of a metal detector (12), where the belt is made of fiber-reinforced and flexible plastic. An independent claim is also included for a device with a retainer and a metal detector.
