PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting an anomaly in the process of generating an absolute value signal with an anomaly detection/processing circuit of an absolute encoder prevented from becoming enlarged while determining an anomaly position within the absolute encoder to determine the anomaly in the absolute encoder. SOLUTION: Processing is performed in such a sequence that: a specific bit of an absolute value signal generated by an absolute value signal generation part 6 in each of definite cycles is compared with a specific bit of the absolute value signal generated one cycle before the absolute value signal to calculate an increased or decreased amount; a comparative operation part 13 capable of comparison with a preset anomalous value compares a specific bit of an absolute value signal generated in each of absolute value signal generation cycles with a specific bit of the absolute value signal generated one cycle before to calculate an increased or decreased amount; comparison is made with the preset anomalous value; anomaly determination is made if the anomalous value is exceeded; and an anomaly detection signal is output from an anomaly detection output part.
