A reinforced gas valve assembly (20) having a valve stem (28) secured to a main valve body (22) adjacent a valve member (30). The valve includes a retaining cover plate (42) configured to secure the valve stem (28) to the valve body (22) and a reinforcement member (56) coupled to both the valve stem (28) and the retaining cover plate (42) for restricting radial movement of the valve stem (28).
