Explosive mixt. contains a crystallised explosive nonfusible at the temp. of manufacture and an opt. explosive binder incorporating an oxidising additive selected from the nitrate and higher oxides of lead (PbO2 and Pb3O4) in amt. 1-15%. The mixt. is used for explosive shells. The energy liberated or detonation of the charge, per unit volume is increased by a greater amt. by addition of the oxidant than by addition of an equal volume of non-fusible expensive. The cost of the mixt. is reduced since the oxidant is cheaper than the explosive.
