PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultraviolet curing type water-based coating composition, capable of forming a coated film having excellent adhesion, scratch resistance and hardness not only onto plastics and primers, but also onto metals and woods and capable of imparting a variety of design effects by utilizing transparency and gloss, etc. SOLUTION: The water-based coating composition comprises (A)≥20 pts.wt. and≤69 pts.wt. of a crosslinking agent composed of a polyfunctional (meth)acrylate having≥3 (meth)acryloyl groups in one molecule, (B)≥30 pts.wt. and≤79 pts.wt. of a water-dispersible base resin having (meth)acryloyl group on the side chain having 2,000-50,000 weight-average molecular weight and (C)≥1 pt.wt. and≤10 pts.wt. of a water-dispersible ultraviolet light polymerization initiator having 500-2,000 weight average molecular weight.
